How to Start a Successful Blog
Writing about your interests and experiences on a regular basis can be very rewarding and open the door to new opportunities and possibilities, whether you’re trying to promote yourself as an expert in your field or just want to share the highlights of your life with friends and family. If you’re new to blogging or don’t have a lot of experience with it, however, starting off isn’t always easy. This guide will help you understand what blogging is all about, how to set up your own blog, and how to succeed at blogging even if you’re just starting out.
1. Know your topic
When you’re first starting out, it can be tempting to write about anything and everything. But an unfocused approach can mean your audience doesn’t find what they need. A sure-fire way to start connecting with people is by knowing your niche and sticking with it. Find out if anyone has done something similar before you, study their content and consider how you could take your writing in a different direction—or simply make it better!
2. Create a blogging schedule
Have you ever considered starting your own business? Now that you’ve got a clear idea of what you want your blog to be, and have written out your goals and ideas, it’s time to get serious about getting started. The next step is figuring out how much time blogging will take up in your life—will it replace an existing hobby or leisure activity? Will it take away from family time?
3. Choose the best blogging platform
WordPress is by far one of most popular blogging platforms online, but it isn’t necessarily your best option. For beginners, choose a platform that’s intuitive and user-friendly so you can focus on writing quality content instead of fighting with new software.
4. Get an optimized website
If you want your new company website to be at least as successful as your business, you should get it optimized. Your internet presence is important for reaching new customers and establishing credibility with existing ones. However, there are countless companies that have great websites that do nothing for their businesses. The reason? It’s not just about looks—it’s also about functionality. If people can’t find what they need quickly and easily, they will leave and never come back.
5. Work on your brand
Even if you’re not ready to start a full-fledged business just yet, you can still create your personal brand. Think of it as an unofficial business card for your skills and interests. 6. Receive feedback from others
Start by getting feedback from your trusted friends and family. Are they interested in what you’re blogging about? Do they like your writing style? Is there anything you can do to make your posts more enjoyable for them? If not, are there any blogs that they would recommend for you to emulate? Take note of their answers and feedback, and ask them if they think your idea will be successful.
7. Add pictures and videos to your blog posts
Your readers don’t want to read words—they want interesting visuals. A lot of bloggers believe in an image for every 100 words, but that can vary based on your audience and industry. Regardless, visual content is important for attracting visitors, so it makes sense to include pictures or videos with your posts whenever possible. Make sure you use high-quality images and make them big enough that they look good when they’re shrunk down on mobile devices.
8. Write engaging titles
The title of your post is what drives readers to click on it. If you’re blogging for business, consider including keywords in your titles that your target audience might be searching for. Most blogs have between five and seven words in their headlines. Be sure your most important keywords are included somewhere in that number, but don’t stuff it so full that no one will want to read it!

It takes time to build up an audience; aim for one post per week at first, and gradually build up from there. Make sure each of your posts is interesting enough that readers will want to come back again next week!
